Architect Vaibhavi Patel: Where Functionality Meets Sustainability

In a world where architecture often prioritizes aesthetics, Ar. Vaibhavi Patel’s work stands out for its focus on functionality and sustainability. With over seven years of experience, Vaibhavi founded Working_Hands Design Studio in 2018 with the aim of designing spaces that serve both people and the planet.

Her educational background at CEPT University, combined with her early exploration of Gujarat’s architectural heritage, shaped her vision as an architect. Vaibhavi’s approach to design is rooted in her belief that architecture must blend with its surroundings and serve the people who use it.

At Working_Hands Design Studio, every project starts with one key question: How does this space work for the people who will use it? Vaibhavi’s designs are carefully crafted to balance practical functionality with aesthetic beauty. This focus on functionality—ensuring spaces fulfill their intended purpose—has become a hallmark of her practice.

In her ongoing project in Tirthan Valley, Himachal Pradesh, Vaibhavi combines traditional Kath-Khuni architecture with modern, sustainable design principles. The result is a functional, climate-responsive home-stay that remains true to its heritage while meeting contemporary needs.

Vaibhavi’s journey to entrepreneurship has been marked by challenges, particularly in reconciling client expectations with the technical limitations of design. “Effective communication was key in overcoming these obstacles,” she notes.
Her ability to stay adaptable and flexible in the face of challenges has been essential to her success. She believes that a deep understanding of the client’s vision is just as important as the technical skills an architect possesses.

Vaibhavi is a strong proponent of sustainable architecture. She sees green design not as a trend but as a necessary evolution in the profession. “Architecture must respond to environmental challenges while enhancing human well-being,” she asserts. Her studio’s work is a clear example of how sustainability and functionality can coexist in harmony.

Vaibhavi encourages budding architects to stay passionate and curious. “You have the power to shape the future through design,” she says. “Embrace sustainability, pursue your creative ideas, and always design with a sense of purpose.”
