Abhishek Kumar, an IIT Kanpur graduate, made headlines when he left a high-paying job at Goldman Sachs to become a security guard. This bold move wasn’t about a career downgrade—it was a masterstroke in market research. His goal? To revolutionize the way security works in Indian gated communities. Today, that vision has grown into MyGate, a tech-driven security and community management platform now valued at ₹1,670 crore (approx. $200 million).
This inspiring journey began when Abhishek decided to understand the ground realities of residential security firsthand. Donning a guard’s uniform, he worked 14-hour shifts at the entrance gates of housing societies. His objective was clear: study the pain points, inefficiencies, and needs of both residents and security personnel. While most people saw just another uniformed guard, Abhishek was quietly building a vision that would soon transform security operations across India.
To bring this idea to life, Abhishek teamed up with two other visionaries—Vijay Arisetty, a decorated Indian Air Force pilot and war veteran, and Shreyansh Daga, a tech expert with credentials from IIT Guwahati and ISB. The trio combined their strengths in security, strategy, and technology to create MyGate, a mobile-based app that manages visitor entries, deliveries, staff attendance, and much more in gated communities.
Launched in 2016, MyGate has seen explosive growth. It now serves over 25,000 housing societies and more than 4 million users across India. The app processes a staggering 100 million check-ins every month, showcasing its scale and reliability. But perhaps the most impactful statistic is this: MyGate has helped over 1.2 million security guards transition from outdated paper registers to smart, digital tools—enhancing both efficiency and accountability.
MyGate’s success is a testament to solving real-world problems with empathy and innovation. Its features, such as OTP-based entry, visitor pre-approval, emergency alerts, and digital intercom, offer residents a safer, smarter living experience. It also empowers housing societies to streamline operations, reduce costs, and boost security transparency.
The company has raised substantial funding from leading investors, reflecting the confidence in its scalable model and social impact. With India’s urban population growing rapidly and residential communities expanding across cities, MyGate is poised to play an even bigger role in the future of smart living.
Abhishek Kumar’s journey—from an IIT grad and investment banker to a security guard and then to the co-founder of a ₹1,670 crore startup—is more than just a success story. It’s a powerful reminder that innovation starts with understanding real problems, and leadership often means stepping into uncomfortable shoes—sometimes quite literally.
In a world driven by flashy pitches and overnight success, the MyGate story stands out for its humility, grit, and ground-up approach. It shows that with the right intent and vision, even the gates we guard can become gateways to transformation.
