Mayur Kalani, Founder- MAK AND TECH

Mayur Kalani is an extraordinary business person who revolutionized his family business by introducing technology into conventional 2D printing. Born in a Sindhi family, it was a natural fit for Mayur to join his father’s business at a young age, when he was still in school.

He recalls the day when he visited his father’s office, and looked at the activities and operations that were being done on paper. Mayur took some time to find a rhythm to infuse technology in these conventional ways and a couple of months later, after having a word with his father about the forthcoming development and changes in the era, he went to put his ideas forward but his father didn’t pay heed to his ideas, to which Mayur says,” it was naturally not an easy task for them to upgrade to Technology after ages of working conventionally.”

Mayur then spoke to his grandfather about his ideas that could invite a boom in the industry with his technologically adaptive ideas, to which his grandfather agreed and eventually the desired changes were made, making the work flow a lot easier.

After rebooting his father’s business, Mayur went to Mumbai with a question in mind “How can I be a part in the technological shift that this world was going to see?” He remained in Mumbai for two months and unfortunately had to come back because of a broken ankle, with no specific answers in his mind. During the time he was recovering, he took the path of internet to research more about the industrial revolution and that was the time he realized that soon the world will be drawn towards 3D and 2D will be a thing of the past.

After clearing his vision to a great extent, Mayur went on to find how can a 3D printer be made, the applications of 3D printing, technologies involved and the companies & countries that are into 3D printing. With an extensive research, he get along with the idea of ordering spare parts for 3D printers, which took Mayur a month to assemble and after that moment, he could fantasize what this gross thing can do! After showcasing it to his grandfather, Mayur set up his own 3D lab – ‘MAK AND TECH’.

Sharing more about his venture, Mayur shares, “3D printing is an additive manufacturing method which is relatively latest technology where products are created layer by layer, rather than traditional manufacturing process. Layering process allows for more complex shapes to be constructed as a single piece thus dropping down the need to include additional joining process & reduction in post processing. Once the digital file is created there is no need of any manual work to be conducted during the process. Today, 3D printing has become backbone of the fourth industrial revolution”.
